Despite a long tradition of research, education and innovation for sustainable development only a fraction is utilized. The achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 requires action. Therefore, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) was established in 2012 under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, to mobilize global scientific and technological expertise to promote practical problem solving to reach the SDGs. The SDSN provides an independent, open and inclusive process to support and scale-up sustainable solutions at national, regional and global levels as it works with stakeholders including universities, the private sector, government, UN agencies and international organizations.

The SDSN is operationalized via secretariats hosted in Paris and New York and mobilized by national and regional SDSN networks; each convened and coordinated by a national or regional secretariat. SDSN Northern Europe was launch in February 2016, in Gothenburg, as one of the national and regional networks to support the realization of actions to achieve the SDGs in Agenda 2030.
