2015 has been a pivotal year for sustainable development with the adoption of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) intended to guide the development of policies, agendas and solutions in the next 15 years. The goals are universal and relevant to all countries, and have the power to question how we live, how we structure our economies and the way we produce and consume and call for sustainable solutions and new alliances to create transformations to sustainability. In response to this, Sweden has received a mandate to host a Secretariat for Northern Europe within the global Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN). An official 2-day Launch Event will take place on the 25th and 26th of February 2016, in Gothenburg, Sweden.
Day 1, Seminar: Science-based transformations 2030 February 25th, 2016
Day 1 will gather leading northern European and international researchers from diverse disciplines to share ideas and research on transformations to sustainability.
The goal of the event is to come to a better understanding of the opportunities SDSN NE creates for science as a key driver in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By critically examining solutions, practices, gaps and conditions for large-scale transformations to sustainability, focus will be on creating a shared understanding of the SDGs and a common set of goals for the work forward. The event will also allow Nordic universities to present their own work for sustainability and how they aim to work towards the success of the SDGs.
The SDSN NE is working to include all interested stakeholders to take part in a joint framework for science-based transformations to sustainability.
Day 2, High-level Launch Event SDSN NE February 26th, 2016
Day 2 will convene leaderships from business, academia and government to mark the launch of the SDSN Northern Europe (SDSN NE) and discuss respective roles, partnerships and cooperation.
The aim will be to illustrate the relevance of the SDGs for the Northern European region and to highlight the roles for stakeholders on a national, regional and global level. The focus will be to present and discuss different programmes and initiatives within the framework of the SDSN NE, and in particular the Solutions Initiatives Forum (SIF), as an effective mechanism for implementing solutions in support of the SDGs, and to discuss what opportunities and challenges this presents for stakeholders.
Participation to the High-level Launch Event is by invitation only.
